Warm temperatures bring relief to winter weary residents as the weather bureau warns the warm spell will be brief. Colder air is expected tonight with highs in the 50s this afternoon then dropping to the 30s. Schools reopen Monday after a long holiday as temperatures dip to the 40s Saturday.
Robert W. Russell will detail a proposed $5 million redevelopment on West Patrick street second block at a Downtown Merchants Association luncheon. Plans include razing south side buildings from Court street to Delphey's and erecting multi story offices and retail space with a 46 car parking plaza. an eight story building is envisioned. City officials rezoned the land in November to allow the project. The Frederick County Historical Society opposes razing several historically significant homes.
A federal grand jury indicted three men for kidnaping Frank Sinatra Jr. on six counts including conspiracy and ransom calls. Defendants John William Irwin Barry Worthington Keenan and Clyde Joseph Amsler, all 23, were arraigned pending further proceedings after Irwin’s arrest near San Diego and a earlier FBI collaboration.
Earl F. Tracey reported a 140 pound doe was struck and killed by an unidentified motorist on Md 81 about one mile west of Thurmont. A passerby notified State Police who found the animal beside the road around dawn today.
The King farm along East Patrick street extended sold for 133000 to a Washington investor. The 44.17 acre industrial site includes a large house and barn, with sale handled by Null Inc and Charles H Jamison. Frederick Community College will resume site search, now considering Martz, Wiles, and U S 40 properties. three sites remain under consideration.
Honolulu AP reports two brief distress signals from nine crew members of a C124 Globemaster forced down 750 miles west of Hawaii. Signals at 3 am and 6 am lasted two seconds each, too brief for exact location but pointed to a general 100 mile area being searched by planes and ships from Wake to Hawaii.
The entire Bible is being read nearly nonstop on WFME FM Newark starting 6 am on January 1 for 18 hours daily until about 6 pm Monday except Sundays. Readings were recorded by 1,376 volunteers from 20 states, each conveying about 25 verses.
President Johnson plans to appoint Esther Peterson as presidential assistant on consumer matters after creating a new top post. Peterson, a homemaker, teacher, union official and former sub cabinet officer, is already the highest ranking woman in government and meets with Willard Wirtz on department budget matters at the LBJ Ranch today.
A single badly burned body was found in the tail of a light plane after it crashed and exploded in a wooded, mountainous area near Bruceton Mills in Preston County. Constable Paul Ryan said one body was recovered and a ground search for potential other victims was begun. The crash occurred on Marlin Benson’s farm about halfway between Bruceton Mills and Cooper's Rock, roughly a mile off West Virginia 73.
The Agriculture Department approved Continental Grain Co. to export 12 862 500 bushels of Durum wheat from surplus government stocks for sale abroad likely to the Soviet Union. This may be the first sale to Russia since Moscow indicated interest last fall.
Cincinnati Reds manager Fred Hutchinson has a malignancy. The extent and position were not disclosed. Announcement came from Bill DeWitt and Hutchinson's physician brother, at Hutchinson's Seattle home.
The Frederick Junior Chamber of Commerce forms a committee to nominate Frederick's outstanding young man of the year. Nomination blanks are available through local Jaycees. The 21 to 35 year old winner advances to Maryland and national Jaycee contests with final presentations in Santa Monica, California.
Frederick County saw seven more accidents in 1963 than 1962 while fatalities dropped by one. State Police Lt. Carroll E. Cook reports 886 total accidents in 1963, including 17 fatal crashes with 22 deaths, versus 879 accidents and 21 fatal crashes with 23 deaths in 1962.
Senator Barry Goldwater announced his bid for the Republican presidential nomination from his hilltop Phoenix home. The 55 year old conservative leader disclosed the move to Arizona Republican leaders amid a groundswell of support and large fundraising, while planning to file for a Senate term but withdraw if he wins the nomination. He will campaign in New Hampshire as voters there prepare for the March primary, joining Nelson Rockefeller in the GOP field.
Michigan Governor George Romney says he is not a candidate for national office though he remains hopeful about the country’s direction. He has not announced re election plans and observers anticipate another two year term. Romney previously served as president of American Motors.

A Carroll County Circuit Court judge ruled that an 11 year old mental patient cannot be tried on a murder charge in the death of Sterling Turfle at Springfield State Hospital. The boy and two fellow patients were indicted after Turfle’s body was found on hospital grounds October 1.
The United States called Khrushchev's global proposal disappointing and rejected it as a whole while leaving room for considering parts. The State Department said it would confer with allies and study the message for any constructive steps to ease world tension. Johnson had urged concrete peace steps in a New Year message.
Pope Paul VI nears departure for the first papal journey to the Holy Land. Security measures rise as Jordan and Israel prepare bidirectional welcome and press pool grows. In Jerusalem he will meet Patriarch Athenagoras, marking a historic Orthodox meeting since 1438.

He blamed President Johnson for a Christmas Eve sabotage off the Isle of Pines and claimed U.S. agents were involved. A pro-Castro group later claimed responsibility. Castro asserted the Peace Corps and Alliance for Progress would fail as Cuba advances. He warned of potential talks if the United States respects Cuba’s sovereignty and halts economic aggression.
