Maryland Highways May Require 12 to 15 Years To Modernize
State Roads Commissioner Russell H. McCain told Frederick Lions on Friday that Maryland’s highway modernization could take 12 to 15 years with as much more money needed beyond the current funding. He forecast bids of 4.5 to 5 million dollars for primary highways this month and about 4.5 million for secondary roads in January, part of a 170.6 million five year program. McCain praised the SRC Advisory Council and urged more maintenance funds, noting costs are up 65 percent and the job may only be half done. He outlined new revenue distributions that would boost county funds, with Frederick City receiving about 18 thousand annually and Frederick County projected to gain around 410 thousand in 1948. The session at the Francis Scott Key hotel was led by Paul M. Carmack. Salvation Army kettles raised 150 dollars.
