Denver reports a lively free fight in front of the Arcade saloon between Slade of John L. Sullivan’s circle and locals. Officers were overwhelmed. Sullivan sought a revolver at the American House but was ousted with the weapon in proprietor Smith’s hand. Several other items follow in this brief compiled dispatch.
Health officer Townshend reports five thousand measles cases in the district with about one hundred deaths. Baltimore records show twenty four thousand three hundred fifty eight arrests, two thousand one hundred thirty-one held for trial, and five thousand five hundred fifty held to bail. Lodging provided to seventeen thousand nine hundred eighty nine at police stations, with fourteen thousand seven hundred eighty nine males and604 females. In Binghampton New York the Academy of Music and Doyle's hotel adjoining burned, loss around twelve thousand dollars with eight thousand five hundred dollars insured. Emancipation Day observed in Atlanta with four thousand attendees as Bishop Turner denounces racial discrimination. Central church dinner in Fall River serves one thousand poor children. Ernst Dix, sick from trichinosis after eating raw sausage, died, Adar Gull also died. several others not expected to live.
Vennor, the weather prophet, predicts January will begin mild and cloudy from the 1st to 3rd, cooler from the 4th to 6th, cloudy on the 10th, rain on the 11th, and generally colder weather from the 12th onward with a heavy wind sleet and snow storm on the 23rd. From the 24th to month end, expect uncertain weather, wind, cold, clouds, and mixed precipitation.
The Postmaster General ordered a rate shift from third class to merchandize for many items. Postage becomes one cent per ounce for merchandize and printed matter. The rule notes that printing on merchandize does not change its character, and items with ads or design only are fourth class.
