Tokyo police reported at least 17 killed and 41 injured as a surging throng packed the Imperial Palace grounds during New Year wishes to Emperor Hirohito. About 700,000 gathered, with deaths and injuries from a massive crush as people waited to sign the imperial register.
The New Year weekend fatal toll in Maryland totaled five, with three auto deaths and two fire deaths between 6 p.m. New Year’s Eve and 6 a.m. Saturday, down from 12 over Christmas weekend. A 43 year old priest died in Cherry Hill as smoke overtook a church rectory fire. Rev Francis Robbins of St Veronica’s Catholic Church died at Baltimore hospital. Earlier, a Baltimore County fire killed Alfred Ball, a 12 year old Negro boy, and injured three others when an oil stove exploded in Jacksonville.

An eight year old boy and four companions vandalized a West Baltimore synagogue, causing about $1,000 in damage. Benches and chairs overturned, floors littered with prayer books and sacred items, cupboards broken, ceremonial silver bent or damaged, and an undetermined amount stolen from poor boxes. Congregation secretary Samuel H Wachter provided the damage estimate.
A minor tremor rattled homes in three states last night from Middlesboro Kentucky to Asheville North Carolina. No injuries or property damage were reported and the quake lasted several minutes beginning about 9 25 pm. Oak Ridge AEC officials denied any tremor or knowledge of its origin though residents feared an explosion. A grandfather clock moved noticeably in Asheville and a Knoxville caller described the tremor spreading through the house.
Berlins wartime survivor Werner Hemm recounts a Septemberspree by a drunken Russian guard at Tapiau camp in East Prussia killing three inmates. He adds such violence was rare but rumors spread of similar incidents elsewhere in the Soviet camps.
Police say a 23 year old Po mona College student admitted attempting to extort forty thousand dollars from four wealthy Long Beach families to fund his education. Robert Wallace Moen was nabbed in a sting after detectives placed a dummy package and a writing note threatening death led to his arrest.
FBI agents said a young Houston couple wanted in the $57,000 theft of the National Bank of Houston were captured in New Orleans. James David Mitchell, 22, and his wife Lala, 18, await arraignment. Mitchell to face federal bank robbery charges, Lala listed as a material witness. One of four suspects remains at large. Earlier, two other suspects, Denny Norris Allen, 18, and Johnny Navarro Navarro, 24, were in custody. Italy reports 697,000 acres distributed to 52,000 peasant families under land reform.
The Associated Press reports New Year holiday traffic deaths lagged the Christmas total. Through 6 p.m. Thursday, 136 people were killed on highways since New Year’s Eve, versus 237 during Christmas. Violent deaths reached 180, including 24 in fires and 20 in other accidents, with Christmas total at 523 and 38,000 national fatalities for 1953. State tallies list Kentucky 200, Maryland 220, North Carolina 116, Ohio 610, Pennsylvania 102, Tennessee 301, Virginia 400, West Virginia 101. final toll expected under 300 if current rate holds.
The first day of 1954 brought mild weather with a 56 degree reading at Frederick airport. A northeast shift of the expected cold wave was noted as forecasters predicted another subfreezing night and a mild, partly cloudy Sunday. Banks and government offices closed on the holiday, but stores and the post office remained open.
Mild winter weather was forecast for most of the nation with clear skies from coast to coast. Northern New England remained the chilly spot with below zero readings. light snow fell in northern Rockies and areas near the Canadian border. Lieutenant William Beall Miles was killed in a head on crash on U S Route 1 near Parkton Bathmore County early today. His bride of four months, 23 year old Mrs Charlotte Miles, and two others were injured and taken to Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore. Donald Edward Knight 22 of Darlington drove the other car with Airman 2d Paul Badder 19 of Shawsville riding with him. Badder later was hospitalized at Fort Meade.
At about 5 p m Thursday two autos were damaged on North Market near Third in a city collision. Paul F Koogle 488 West South street, driving north, did not see Homer Washington Palmer 1207 North Market street behind him when the car ahead signaled a turn. Koogle pulled left to avoid the lead car and hit the Palmer vehicle. Damage estimated at 300 dollars. No charges were preferred.
In Rome, 13 year old Luciana Barhonis must eat five meals daily to sustain a frail body due to an intestinal tract longer than normal and poor absorption. Doctors say a huge diet is needed, with relatives and Prime Minister discussions about support and care.
Postmaster James Crave reported 5000 greeting cards sent to Fredericus post area were undeliverable due to wrong or incomplete addresses. About 3900 may be delivered in two more weeks, with 2000 stamps uncollected. Several hundred cards were delivered to the wrong street or city, mostly lacking street addresses. Extra mail staff and Sunday deliveries helped clear the backlog amid a peak holiday rush.

Chicago a 19 year old Negro youth questioned by detectives confessed in writing to fatally beating four robbery victims in December. He admitted slaying two men on December 18 and one on December 20, saying he used a brick carried in a paper bag.
Senator Gillette proposed the Senate strip the Government Operations Committee of authority to probe international affairs and transfer it to the Foreign Relations Committee. He warned that careless actions could jeopardize U.S. international status and noted McCarran echoed concerns about the subcommittee overstepping its remit.
In ALICE Texas the post office locked up and closed after postmaster Marguerite Mullen walked out. She claims politics prompt her replacement and barred stamps and cash from the office leaving it to a clerk. No acting postmaster or inspector comment yet.
A 28 year old man from Krave Atlie, Rheo Carr, was treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital for minor injuries after a car struck him on a county road at the 1731 curve near Prmlertch. The unnamed driver fled. state police did not file a formal investigation. In Italy, a police sweep in a Sardinian town hunted outlaws who killed 35, detaining 100 residents with 4 retained by nightfall.
U S officials say Berlin foreign ministers meeting may open Jan 25 but Russia can delay. Moscow aims to slow EDC action and Western plans for rearming West Germany. Possible delays include French government reshuffle, site choice for talks, and topics like future of Germany and recognition of Red China.
Cpl. Daniel F. Calley of Turtle Creek Pennsylvania says he will marry Lubov N. Dimova a 25 year old Russian displaced person and her four year old daughter Sonia. He applied to the Army for permission to wed and expects approval within a month. He plans to bring them to the United States when he returns home in May.
