Communists In Italy Target Catholic Church In European Army Fight
In Rome on January 1 1952 Italian Communist leader Palmiro Togliatti and L Unita outline a new anticlerical campaign attacking the Catholic Church as a force seeking to dominate Western Europe. The Reds oppose a European federation and one unified army tied to Western Germany and Eisenhower. The shift marks a gloves-off strategy after earlier cooperation with church leaders and the Lateran pacts. De Gasperis Christian Democrat response and Vatican papers criticize the move as a political orientation for upcoming elections.
