Researchers fear loss of animals may hinder science
MUSC uses about 800 dogs and cats and tens of thousands of rats and mice yearly sourced from regional pounds. Newberry and Berkeley counties supply about 8 percent of dogs and cats. Animal rights groups and local bans threaten access, risking higher costs and possible shifts to costly lab-bred animals, potentially slowing medical progress.
