German Echo Brandt Elected SPD Leader for Chancellor Bid
Willy Brandt, mayor of West Berlin, was elected leader of the Social Democratic Party and its candidate for chancellor in next year’s national elections. He is seen as a dynamic figure with a frontier style, admired for directing Christmas visits to West Berlin’s communist sector, and is expected to challenge Chancellor Erhard and the CDU although observers doubt his election chances. The campaign is expected to be a granite-like contest between Brandt’s frontier appeal and the CDU’s prosperity-linked prestige.
