A Paris Carnival of Bargains and Booths in the Rag Fair

Special correspondence from Paris describes a city of wooden stalls along Boulevards Sebastopol and Saint Michel during the Jour de Vao. Shops offered toys, jewelry, printing setups, photography, and countless knickknacks while theatres and markets overflowed. The Rag Fait sparked gaiety with carrousels and a tiny infant merry-go-round. The famed La Villette abattoir operates with twenty courts and vast daily slaughter, observed by many women workers and conducted with crude methods. The wooden city vanishes after January 15, then returns as the fair moves between Versailles and Saint Denis before reappearing in Paris.
