Over a 24 hour period ending Thursday firefighters responded to several house fires and automatic alarms. Calls included 7:58 a.m. at 19 Be Third St. 9:01 a.m. at City Hall WL N Court St. 5:04 p.m. at 516 Frail Ave. 6:28 p.m. at Carroll Street near railroad tracks. 6:12 p.m. at 104 N Main St Mount Airy. 7:22 p.m. at 17663 Sabillasville Rd Blue Ridge Summit and Thurmont. Emergency and routine ambulance calls noted.

Student burned in gas can fire near Bethesda
Sunil Vasireddy a 20 year old Indian graduate student at the University of Maryland was burned after lighting a cigarette in his car where a two gallon gas can was found. He suffered burns on about 9 percent of his body and was rushed to the Washington Hospital Center after bystanders doused the flames with snow. He was driving on Jones Mill Road when the fire started with the can’s loose top. Vasireddy attempted to flee as his clothing burned and witnesses helped stop the flames.

Fire engine hit broadside during emergency response in Frederick
A 1971 Pierce fire truck Engine 21 north on North Bentz Street was struck broadside by a pickup at West Fourth Street. Sgt. John L. Schmidt, driving with lights and siren, was not injured. Pickup driver Michael T. Martell, 22, was charged with failure to yield to an emergency vehicle. The unit was en route to a report of smoke from a basement, later found to be a dryer vent.

Man Arrested on Drug Charges In Damascus
Police seized three pounds of marijuana with a street value of 4500 from a Flamingo Terrace home. Bruce Alan Shankel Sr., 36, was arrested on possession with intent to distribute after officers found the drug and a handgun in a bag. The student, a Baker Junior High pupil, said the marijuana came from his parents’ bedroom closet.
