Report Calls for Reform in Educating Teachers

Denver AP says a 17 member National Commission for Excellence in Teacher Education urges liberal arts focus in teacher training and recruiting minorities and professionals from other fields. It proposes extending college programs by eight years and requires major study as part of liberal education. The report notes teacher numbers fell from 300,000 in 1972 to under 150,000 in 1982 and predicts continued declines without reforms. It calls for special programs to attract minority teachers to provide role models and cross cultural exposure.
