Independent Auxiliary Officers Are Installed
The Ladies Auxiliary of Independent Hose Co. No. 1 held its February 16 meeting. Officers installed for the coming year include President Jacqueline Whitmore and vice presid ents Ethel Brust Thelma Handwy, Secretary Lana Ray, Assistant Secretary Pauline Baker, Treasurer Mary Gross, Assistant Treasurer Louise Oden, Chaplain Bessie Covell, Assistant Chaplain Nellie Shaw, color guards Beverly Shaff and Rosalve Long, guard Bonnie Wisner, historian Sue Wismer, with Carrie Quinn as installing officer. After routine business, refreshments were served by Thelma Handing and Mary Giese. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Windsor of Pleasant Grove visited Oakton, Va., with Mrs. Windsor's sister and family, J. W. McAtee.

Masking Radiation Is Most In Atomic Age Speaker Says
Mrs Wayne C Neely assistant professor of chemistry at Mood College spoke to the Zonta Club on Monday evening about the hazards and joys of the atomic age detailing the discovery of x rays radium and radioactivity the nature of radioactive substances and the three types of emissions gamma alpha and beta She described how nuclear reactions release energy and neutrons noting the long lasting fallout from fission products like strontium 90 and emphasized the growing need for national and international controls as humanity faces increasing radiation exposure and expanding atomic energy use She concluded that understanding and prudent management of radiation will determine whether the atomic age develops for good or harm and that science must learn to live with radiation through careful use and regulation Additionally engagements announced include Dorothy Virginia Fisher to Paul R LaBrush and Margaret Jean Condon to Charles William Kaill with spring weddings planned.
