Frederick County endures a new snowstorm with four inches expected by tonight and two inches already on the ground. Roads are slick and schools remain open as temperatures rebound from a high of 49 degrees to near 40s. The month marks a fourth snowfall with over 29 inches in the last two weeks of January.
Two men, John V. Hagan and John C. Casko, were each sentenced to 10 years in the Maryland House of Correction for robbing an 80 year old Lovettsville man. The victim, farmer Charles L. Everhart, said the men forced him to stop near a Burkittsville farm, assaulted him, and stole $31 from his wallet.
A head on crash on U.S. 40 west of Frederick at 5 45 am destroyed two tractor trailers and 200 barrels of whiskey. Grayson Bartholow 55 of Frederick drove the whiskey rig. Marvin Frye 48 of Baltimore drove the passing truck. Both vehicles burned. 50 barrels were saved. Damage estimated at 25000 to each rig. Frye charged with unsafe passing. Bartholow treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital and released.
Frederick City Aldermen plan to bid for a CATV franchise at next Thursday’s meeting. Alder man Richard L. Shipley says pay cable TV is almost certain for the city. The move follows U S Senator Tydings urging FCC changes to allow Maryland viewers access to Washington and Baltimore stations. CATV consultant John L. Hanly criticizes slow city action and cites cautious local attitudes amid ongoing negotiations.
Advance tickets for the Women s National AAU Track and Field Meet in Frederick go on sale June 30 and July 1 2. Over half of the 2500 tickets remain in Frederick and will be sold at city locations and nearby counties. Tickets at 3 reserve seats cover all meet sessions including Thursday afternoon Friday and Saturday. Group rates are available and organizations may inquire.
Maryland's combat ready National Guard brigade may be mobilized by July 1. Brig. Gen. Ogletree announced in Baltimore that the unit, formed from the 29th Division and Maryland National Guard, is fully manned though some equipment is not modern. Company A includes Frederick and Hagerstown elements with HQ and first platoon in Frederick and second and third platoons in Hagerstown.
News reports from Accra say Col. E K Kotoka and elements of the second brigade seized control of Ghana declaring Nkrumah ousted as fighting raged at Flagstaff House. Radio Ghana announced the coup amid unclear effects on foreign policy and ongoing clashes with the president's guard.
Ronald M. Kenny an 18 year old from Mount Airy died in Vietnam becoming the first Frederick area soldier to die in the war. His mother recalled his kindness toward neighbors and his concern for Vietnamese children. He enlisted last June after high school graduation and planned to join the Rangers. He wore a St Christopher medal and hoped for a future in service but never received his family’s final gift, a transistor radio. He would have turned 19 on March 14.
The Frederick County Bar Association urges lawmakers to raise the state's attorney wage to $12,000 a year and require full-time service. They also seek prohibition on private practice, funding for office needs, a stenographer, and abolition of the deputy position amid a House bill raising salaries from $5,000 to $7,000 and $3,600 to $4,000 respectively.
A Viet Cong battalion breached a minefield and attacked elements of the U S 1st Infantry Division near Tan Binh about 30 miles north of Saigon. The assault, part of Operation Mastiff, ended with U S forces repelling the attack after a 34 hour battle, with at least 89 Viet Cong killed and light overall U S casualties. Elsewhere near Da Nang a Marine company repelled a Viet Cong battalion with helicopters supporting, killing 25 and driving the remaining attackers away.
