One-Uniform Pact Army Is Approved
Lisbon, Feb 22. NATO Foreign Ministers unanimously approved a plan to create a two million man European army under Eisenhower including German forces to bolster Western defense. The decision, hailed as a victory for unity, paves the way for a European Defense Community linked to NATO. Ratification by six governments remains, with U.S. aid to France totaling about 370 million dollars in arms and matériel rather than cash.
