A car carrying seven youths at South Market street near Mt. Olivet Cemetery sped 60 to 70 mph and wrecked into a maple tree. Six died on impact or within hours. one girl survived with injuries and was expected to recover. The list includes Sterling Orem 17 Beatrice Fossett 14 Gabriela Moore 18 Gladys Zeigler 14 Eleanor Zeigler 15 Arthur Jackson 22 Mildred Sewell 16 was hospitalized with facial injuries. The crash damaged the car’s left side and fuel tank, and police reported the left front wheel and engine area severely crushed. The driver was identified as Sterling Orem of Fountain Mills. the seven were all Negro youths.
