In San Francisco on February 23 Wolgast defeated Nelson in a grueling match. Nelson was not knocked out but shown with numerous cuts and bruises, his face bloodied as Wolgast claimed the lightweight world title and proved a decisive victory.
Nelson survived a brutal forty round bout though blood stained his face and his right eye closed. The referee halted the fight in the fortieth round to spare further injury in a match originally set for forty five rounds. The former champion Pattler appeared battered and desolate after the clash.
Nelson fought with grit but could not finish the Dutch challenger, taking five blows to reach home once. The crowd of about 11,000 watched the promoter Ald Hicrter stage a major match in a growing city with receipts near 40,000 dollars.
