Frederick grocers and residents face the start of March point rationing for canned and processed foods. OPA tables set high point values causing fears of business paralysis and a one third drop in trade. Empty stores and last minute stock up mark the day as ration books are issued and registration begins for war book two.
The will of Mrs Mary McGill Dennis probated in Orphans Court leaves about 28000 to her immediate family. George R Dennis receives one third of the residue after personal effects. A third goes to daughter Mrs Barbara B Rawlins for life with income to her children until the youngest is 21. Daughter Mrs Ann Sappington receives a similar provision. Farmers and Mechanics National Bank named executor. Will dated June 1900. witnesses Ruth C Stockman and Sarah C Keyser.
A Bruin broadcast said the Soviet winter offensive has presumably passed its max with no further expansion of success. The German high command communiqué indicated continued strong Russian attacks on the northern front and in the Donets area to the south.
Washington February 22 Here's the householder's schedule for food rationing. Today registration begins and continues all week nationwide. Take consumer declaration and No 1 ration books to schools to obtain No 2 books. Clip point values from the newspaper table to guide future shopping. All week do not buy. grocers are forbidden to sell canned fruits vegetables fish meat soups baby food or frozen or dried varieties of the same. You can buy other items in the store. Monday March 1 resume buying canned frozen and dried fruits and vegetables by the point rationing system. Sale of canned meat and fish probably resume at end of month as rationed items along with meat.
Washington reports a lag in meat supply and moves to halt illegal slaughter and black markets. Secretary Wickard expected to announce a plan licensing livestock slaugh terers and mandating sales to licensed operators. Price Administrator Brown labels black markets treasonous and warns of dangerous, poisoned meats reappearing while licensing strengthens civilian and military allocations.
Washington reports the War Production Board has no current need to restrict cigarette manufacture or distribution. The WPB tobacco division cites five facts: ample leaf stock, a large 1942 crop, no labor shortages due to mechanization, primary consumption locally, and maintained Turkish tobacco imports and supplies.
Washington February 22 The Office of Price Administration says restaurants will face rationing similar to households limiting canned fruits vegetables to about 50 percent of prior usage with exact quotas to be announced soon and enforced March 1. The OPA will not enforce restaurant meal rationing. diners must rely on establishments to distribute supplies. Top grades of soybeans now enter price control at 1668 dollars per bushel with OPA approval.
Frederick county reports suggest the 1943 peach crop faces heavy damage from mid-December sub zero temperatures. At Quynn orchards buds froze as low as 19 below zero. Lewis orchards show minor damage with some older trees affected. Other orchards vary, with uncertainties about Mt. Airy and Kelbaugh. Some sections may escape major loss, while warnings persist. Meanwhile a local family learns their son is a prisoner of war in the Philippines.
In Tunisia on February 20 delayed report describes six American soldiers engaging two German Mark IV tanks on a hill east of Sheita. Our troops fired and destroyed both enemy tanks while others engaged from multiple directions. survivors did not exit their burning vehicle as shells exploded, and one American tank crew perished after a lengthy defense. Associate Judge Stedman Prescott affirms earlier findings in a Circuit Court suit over a $1000 life policy on John T Lipps. The policy benefits go to Walter and Ada Lipps in equal shares minus costs, while the Independent Order of Odd Fellows loses its petition. The 1917 policy named Thomas S Lipps as beneficiary.

London reports Bremen was heavily attacked by Royal Air Force bombers last night in a raid from which all bombs were returned. An Air Ministry communique stated none of the aircraft was missing. This was Bremen’s first raid since Oct. 20 when Mosquito bombers struck Wilhelmshaven and Hanover.
Washington February 22 American bombers started fires at the Japanese airbase at Munda on New Georgia Island in a raid Sunday Navy communique No 289 notes Grumman TBF torpedo planes Dauntless dive bombers Warhawk and Corsair escort, bombed positions and started fires. One U S fighter failed to return Munda 180 nautical miles northwest of Guadalcanal airfield has been raided at least 73 times since last November 23 to hamper enemy use.
Washington February 22 Congress may demand a full accounting of expenditures from a 3631 000 000 fund granted to President Roosevelt for secret war projects. Senators Tydings and Taft urged a thorough probe before any renewal, insisting on full information and opposing blanket appropriations.
