Mrs. William P. Burden-Fures died after a gas tube disconnected from a chandelier allowed gas to fill her bedroom. Servants found her in bed after she failed to respond to a morning call. The Burdens, prominent residents of 808 Fifth Avenue, were shocked by the fatal accident and ensuing social stir.
Morning discovery shows gas flow from a lamp tube dislodged near a window. Mrs. Burden died from inhaling the fumes after the tube loosened, while the murderer none shows signs of struggle. The pet pomeranian slept nearby. Mrs. Burden was linked to the Belmont family through a former husband.
Wayne era Wilkes-Barre district reports a cage accident at Lehich and Wilkes-Barre Coal Co mine shaft left five injured and one dead. The cage collapsed during descent, wrecking the shaft and trapping workers. rescue efforts followed but fatalities occurred.
New York reports slight improvement in business volume and rising future confidence. Buyers attend primary and jobbing markets placing fair spring orders, with a preference for small quantities for prompt shipments. Manufacturers resume operations. many plants to reopen next month as construction costs revive plans for new buildings. Steel and iron shipments show growth with about half of steel capacity active, up from one quarter at year’s start. more trials resume after next week.
Bound to a tree for hours during a brutal blizzard, Clarence Robson a student at Hedding College Abington was restrained by fellow students in a plant. He broke free and crawled through snowdrifts after his bonds were cut by another student, though frostbitten ears feet and hands were suffered before he reached shelter.
Warren $8. Stone of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers vows to block any wage reductions for train service workers. He argues pay is mileage based and tied to business, not fault of labor. William C. Lee of the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen says workers suffer from mismanagement, urging preservation of current living standards and wages. New York Central reports wages unchanged after an accord within the railroad conductors. Also reported are a Brooklyn schoolboy's suicide over presumed family plans and a Newark counterfeiter conviction along with a man admitting a joke about feeding his wife snowballs.
