Frederick Douglass Dies After Sudden Heart Attack
Frederick Douglass died at his Anacostia home shortly before 7 PM from heart disease. The ex slave statesman, aged 54, attended a convention earlier and spoke with Susan B Anthony. Born 1817 near Easton Maryland, he rose to prominence through abolitionist work with Garrison and later roles in journalism, politics, and diplomacy. His second wife Helen Pitta, a New England clerk, survived him. He led a life of public service including editor of The North Star, later The New National Era, and service as assistant secretary, marshal, and minister to Hayti. His wealth was reported variously.
