Utility won't buy out AES power plant near Cumberland
Allegheny Power admits it cannot stop the AES Warrior Run plant and won’t pursue a buyout of its 1999 contract. Regulators and actions could trim the impact on Maryland customers, with projected rate rises and a phased increase from 1999 to 2000. AES argues the rate hike would be smaller.

Maryland may crack down on lead paint law compliance
Maryland environment officials weigh enforcement after nearly a year of lead paint rules. Alvin Bowles says only about half of pre-1950 rental units are registered, with some estimates as low as 30 percent. Critics cite landlord hardship finding certified contractors, while supporters urge tougher action to protect children’s health and curb noncompliance.
