Israel raids two Shiite villages in south Lebanon

An Israeli force backed by Cobra gunships burst through UN barriers and stormed two Shiite villages in south Lebanon in a narrow, limited operation to target Katyusha launchers and guerrilla nests after rocket attacks. Two Israeli soldiers were killed, three wounded, four guerrillas killed, with injuries to two UN peacekeepers, four guerrillas, and five civilians.

Hood College to Cut Salaries and Jobs to Fight Budget Gap

Hood College will trim salaries by 5 percent and eliminate about 20 staff positions starting July 1 as a one time measure to offset anticipated reductions in state aid for the 1993 fiscal year. Most cuts come from retirements with some layoffs. extended benefits will be provided to affected workers. President Martha Church aims to restore full salaries when conditions improve.

Way Station lays off eight workers in Frederick

Way Station, a treatment and rehabilitation center for serious mental illness, laid off eight workers this week to offset a $100,000 budget shortfall after the state stopped funding for some services. CEO Grady O'Rear said the loss slows expansion, noting the agency grew from 20,000 to about 4 million in funding as it serves 200 people, with Medicaid paying 87 percent of care.

FCC readsies contingency budget plan for 1993

Frederick Community College trustees approved two operating budgets for 1993 one based on full funding and another contingency plan if state budget cuts occur. The board also altered FCC President Lee Betts contract to one year while maintaining his 84774 salary. The plan notes full funding totals 13 million with 3.9 million from the state and the contingency budget limits spending to 11.8 million. Betts warned of uncertainty while faculty say staff are stretched and the board approved filling staff positions.

Planners push cuts in county school capital budget

Frederick County plans a $94.7 million six year school capital program with three new elementary schools one middle school and one high school plus renovations including Gov Thomas Johnson High School but plans delay land purchases additions and a Hillcrest area elementary school and a Middletown area elementary school while warning growth will outpace seats. Dr Daniel Gadra notes spacing and portable classrooms strain capacity and opposes delaying renovations and middle school addition projects.

County reviews pared down capital budget in Winchester hearings

Frederick County's proposed capital budget totals about 49.8 million, lighter than this year. Frederick centers join effort to aid former Soviet republics

Frederick Surgical Center and Frederick Memorial Hospital plan to donate supplies under Operation Provide Hope. 11 to 40 large boxes of sutures bandages and surgical equipment will be offered from 915 Toll House Ave. The program coordinated by the American Hospital Association aims to ship medicines bandages and other items to CIS republics hit by upheaval.

Unemployment claims rise in first week of February

Washington AP reports 452,000 Americans filed first time jobless claims in the week ending early February, up 18,000 from the prior week’s revised 434,000. Analysts expected a modest drop, cautioning against reading too much into a single week while watching the four week trend.
