A Frederick man recalls the Iwo Jima battle with vivid detail. Commander Leon P Hisman USN led the U S Naval Unit attached to the Fifth Marine Division and earned the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His son Leon P Hisman Jr was born on Iwo Jima.
A detailed recounting of Iwo Jima operations highlights Lt Commander Eisman who pulled a wounded man from a collapsing foxhole and aided Seabees under fire. The Fifth Division fought through Mt Suribachi, where the flag was raised, with 40,000 enemy troops housed underground. Eisman later led sanitation work, earned a leg wound, and helped secure the island before sailing to Hawaii. he now chairs the Fifth Marine Division Association.
