Demands End to Short Work Weeks at GM Plants
DETROIT February 18 The CIO United Automobile Workers demanded GM abandon short work weeks and share the work load to provide a full 40 hour week for regular employees. Layoffs would hit newer hires first, then some with seniority if needed. GM reports show about 385,000 hourly workers nationwide, with roughly 340,000 in auto plants. The union cited Curtice’s optimistic expansion plans for 1954. In Annapolis, a House Judiciary Committee favored a bill to require open meetings of public bodies though with weak penalties, aiming for greater public access and preventing executive sessions. A three week revival at the Church of God ended February 7 with new members and strong attendance under Evangelist Elvin Crum.
