Hybrid Corn Replacing Old Varieties Of Corn
Hybrid corn is replacing old varieties as Dr. Merle T. Jenkins notes the U.S. acreage rising from 40 000 in 1933 to 3 500 000 in 1937 and projected to 15 000 000 acres this year. He cites resistance to drought storms and disease, 15 to 30 percent higher yields, and explains crossing inbred lines to create double cross hybrids used for seed. County tests show good results but questions remain about practicality for average farmers.

Aerial Mine Threatens Navy Amid Naval Expansion Debate
In Washington on February 13, inventor Lester P. Barrow of Stamford Connecticut warned Congress that a new aerial mine could force drastic changes to the Navy’s 1.05 billion dollar expansion plan. He claimed the device could disable or bombard a ten mile square area in minutes and that the program must be adjusted to counter this threat at high altitudes. He said he was the first to lose bombs to strategic aerial warfare and urged the committee to adapt for a weapons race that could target ships above 15,000 feet.
