Senate Approves Nicaragua Canal Treaty With 55 to 18 Vote
Washington February 19. The senate approved the Nicaragua canal route treaty by fifty five to eighteen, fifteen Republicans voting yes and five Democrats voting no. The pact grants the United States executive propriety rights for an interoceanic canal, a ninety nine year lease of Great and Little Corn islands, and a naval base on the Gulf of Fonseca, with a $3 million payment to Nicaragua. The agreement allows a renewal term of ninety nine years, taxes waived by amendment, and funds to be used for debt reduction or other public purposes in Nicaragua subject to ministerial and secretary of state approval. The treaty was introduced by Secretary Bryan and ratification includes a proviso by Senator Broussard affirming good U.S. intentions and safeguarding the rights of Central American states.

Three Hurt At Dupont's Explosion At Carney's Point
Three men were injured in a Dupont plant fire at Carney's Point Delaware with one seriously hurt. The injured were William Pomeroy William Allen and William Morrison with burns and injuries from falling glass and a broken ankle. The rifle powder press house was damaged and the origin was unknown.
