Drought Drives Off Schedule at Maryland Trout Hatchery
In Maryland drought conditions push hatchery crews to stock earlier and smaller trout. Howard Stinefelt notes record low water forces 3,000 trout loaded for transport as Bear Creek Spring runs at under half its normal rate. Powell hatchery now shifts to accommodate younger fish to prepare for the March 30 opening of palm trout season.

Virginia eyes tighter crab harvest limits in Bay

Senator Chichester forfeits an egg-crab ban for redrawn sanctuary fines expanding no-crab zones, while proposed rules bar pregnant sponge crabs during spawning week. VMRC and VMIS researchers led the plan, with public hearings slated in March and a year‑long carryover of the bill.
