Four wheel steering car targets faster Indy speeds
Mickey Thompson, the Long Beach speed king, and Wynn Oil Co. preview a four wheel steering Spit Fire for the Indianapolis 500. The front engine car uses front wheel steering and rear wheels turning opposite to reduce slip angle, potentially boosting cornering speed and straightaway pace at the 2 1 2 mile track. Thompson said the idea, tested in 1963, still requires development for the race.

Frederick Cadets, 17-1, clinched at least a Tri-State League co title though upset by gloom in the locker room. Coach Homer Brooks cited the flattest offense of the season, with Willis Hall producing a quiet night and off the bench Thomas providing late spark as Denny Oram and Sam Palm dealt with illness. The win puts Frederick on top, with a potential sole crown if they beat North Hagerstown on Tuesday.
