Pineau Cabinet Faces Vote as France Seeks New Premier
Paris Socialist Christan Pineau sought confirmation as France's 21st postwar premier amid a cabinet crisis. The Assembly opened with his speech on his proposed Cabinet and program, followed by debate and a likely late-night vote. Backers needed a solid majority, with some estimates below 290 votes, and approval hinges on continued support. His platform included wage increases, extending Mendes France's authority over North African protectorates, and ratification of Paris treaties with West German rearmament. The Assembly's approval would still require Senate action.
