Hammer Hill of Clarksburg Center of Early Community
Hammer Hill in Clarksburg is a 40 acre parcel once patented to Michael A Dowden in 1752. The Dowden family built Dowden's Ordinary or hotel along the Sinnceua Trail, hosting General Braddock and General Washington era travelers. The hotel operated for decades before fading, later becoming Shaw Hill, with memorials placed by DAR in 1915. The site now bears the Shaw Hill name and marks a historic colonial road hub.
