Drowning of Two 11-Year-Olds in Quarry Near Manor Woods
James Robert Brook Whetzel of Buckeystown and Michael Thomas Fitze of Frederick drowned Sunday evening after likely falling through ice into six to eight feet of water at a quarry on the north side of Manor Woods Hud. Bodies recovered around midnight by Carroll Manor Fire Department after a two hour dredging effort. The boys, classmates at Carroll Manor Elementary, were last seen at about 4 pm. Surviving relatives include parents Elmer Thomas Fitz and Helen M Sunne Fitz, two brothers, two sisters, and two step-sisters. Funeral arrangements set at Smith Fadeles Keeney and Bastard Funeral Home with services Thursday at 2 pm and burial at Mount Carmel United Methodist Cemetery.
