Frederick City and County faced a light snow excerpt Friday as a fresh system threatened Sunday. The weatherman cautions this could be the 14th winter storm with variable amounts, some days earlier dumping 16 inches. Temperature swings, forecast snow, and a steady pattern of small storms define the season.
Three teenage boys were hospitalized after a 1954 Ford left Md. 28 west of Rockville, struck a guide wire and tree at 3:30 a.m. The driver, 18 year old Marion Wayne Lamb of Gaithersburg, faces a charge of speed greater than reasonable. Passengers Phillip Trout 17 of Gaithersburg and Adolphus Nichols 17 of Damascus were treated. Nichols was discharged.
Former Republican governor Theodore R. McKeldin hinted he may challenge for the Maryland governorship if he decides to run. He urged others to enter, saying the GOP cannot win without candidates. At a Baltimore Lincoln Day dinner he said he is not a candidate now and would run only if possible. The Lord Baltimore Hotel hosted 700 to 750 dinners, and a March 5 filing deadline was noted.
Vatican City AP Pope John XXIII named ten new cardinals raising the College of Cardinals to 87 none from North America. A Consistory was set for March 19 to present red hats. The appointees include three Italians two South Americans one Irishman one Spaniard one Portuguese one Belgian and one Syrian.
A midwinter weather spread across the United States with rain snow freezing drizzle and variable temperatures. Cloudy skies dominated the north with mix of rain along the Pacific coast and snow in the Plains and Great Lakes regions. Temperatures ranged from 101 below zero in North Dakota to 73 in Florida.
Carroll Manor Fire Company extinguished a chimney blaze in a house owned by Maynard Kline about half a mile from Adamstown toward Point of Rocks. Two engines fought the flames for under an hour. An ambulance later carried a medical patient from Point of Rocks to Frederick Memorial Hospital.
Dr. William S. Spicer Jr told about 63 doctors at the Maryland Trudeau Society meeting at the Francis Scott Key Hotel that overwhelming evidence links air pollution and smoking to respiratory disease. He cited industrial waste car emissions and weather as factors, warned of latent long term effects, and noted rising lung cancer deaths. The session opened at 9 am with speakers from Johns Hopkins, University of Maryland, and other institutions. a lunch followed.
Youthful demonstrators march on the White House and nearby embassies to urge a ban on nuclear testing by the United States and the Soviet Union. About 1,500 students participated with hopes to reach 3,000, while leaders planned further talks with officials and advisers. Kennedy privately supports discussion but has not decided on resuming atmospheric tests.
Dr Clifford B Lull Jr was appointed to the Radiology Department at Frederick Memorial Hospital by the Board of Managers. He is granted privileges on the Associate Medical Staff and will work with Drs Edgar Campbell and Thomas Reid at the hospital and Medical Center.

Alderman William B. Burall announced he will seek re election to the Frederick Board of Aldermen rather than run for mayor. A veteran of 12 years, he highlights fire equipment funding, police staffing, and downtown lighting advances as his key achievements and says he aims to continue serving on the board. He endorsed E. Paul Magaha for mayor and considered a state legislature run but prefers local governance.
A state of emergency was proclaimed in British Guiana after a bloody day of riots and looting that left at least six dead and about 20 million West Indian dollars in goods destroyed. Troops and ships poured into Georgetown to secure power stations and the homes of Prime Minister Cheddi Jagan and ministers amid a mass exodus to the suburbs.
In Stamford a 4 year old’s birthday party ends in violence as Albert Shipley, 65, shoots Edward Chernuchkin, 41, killing him and wounding Veronica Chernuchkin before Shipley is fatally shot by the family’s son Jack, 16. An unrelated adult, Alice Hill, was present as officers describe the sequence. Shipley faced a manslaughter charge and Jean Chernuchkin was briefly detained before posting bond. Representative Clark MacGregor of Minnesota, cited as a top freshman, will speak at the Frederick and Montgomery County Bar joint dinner at the Francis Scott Key Hotel Monday. The event draws over 100 attorneys and judges, with organizers from Frederick County Bar inviting Montgomery County Bar to join.
Northern Europe faced one of its worst storms of the century as high winds and floods hit Britain and Germany. In Britain at least 11 died, in Germany six confirmed dead with many missing as the North Sea breached dikes. Hamburg and Bremerhaven evacuated thousands while U.S. troops and German authorities aided sandbagging amid mass evacuations.
Fourteen of 135 Pennsylvania Railroad freight cars derailed in Bay View yards seven miles north of Baltimore. No injuries reported though four main lines were blocked. Wrecking crews mobilized. passenger trains may detour depending on clearing operations. Cause under investigation.
