New Earnings Rules Take Effect For Social Security
In January 1961 liberal rules on earnings by beneficiaries began. The $1,200 threshold remains, with $1 of benefits withheld for each dollar earned from $1,200 to $1,500 and for every dollar above $1,500. No penalties if wages are under 10 cents or self employment is not substantial. no withholdings for those aged 72 or older. Earnings of dependents affect their own benefits. Wages and net self employment earnings count. investment income and pensions do not. For details contact a social security office.
