In a brief session the Maryland House passed three measures. Two create an absentee voting framework for qualified residents. A third bill adds District of Columbia workers to Maryland’s new state income tax withholding program.
Annapolis February 15 subcommittee abandons funding the proposed port authority with a gasoline tax increase. They lean toward raising corporate income tax to 5 percent while considering advertising taxes and horse racing revenue to finance the port of Baltimore. Anne Arundel County demands full taxing power over any county property acquired by the authority. The bill also reassigns member appointments from each region. Public hearing scheduled for 11 a.m. tomorrow.
Maryland legislators heard that the states source of public school teachers is drying up and an across the board raise of 400 dollars with a 600 dollar boost for masters degree holders is proposed. Secretary Maison C. Raver said 3 800 new teachers per year will be needed for five years and an out of state recruitment and other methods cannot keep pace. He noted Maryland ranks 12th in teacher salaries and proposed state outlays of 10 200 000 beginning fall 1957.
President Eisenhower arrived in Thomasville Georgia for a week of rest and plans to decide on his 1956 bid for a second term. Doctors gave a go ahead for hunting and possible golf, with March 1 as a likely decision date. Public interest centers on his health and political plans as he contemplates leaving Washington for the White House.
