Maryland Lottery Proposals Tout Veterans Bonus Plan
The Maryland Legislature advances two new war veterans bonus bills. One would raise the sales tax by 5 percent to fund bonuses up to 400 for World War I II and Korean War veterans, the other would create a state lottery to pay similar bonuses. Both measures require a public referendum and outline operation by a veterans lottery commission.

Needs Fund To Insure Home Loan Mortgages
Washington February 14 Congress was asked to provide an extra 1.1 billion to keep the government from running out of funds to insure home mortgages. Housing Chief Albert Cole told the Senate Banking Committee the current money will be exhausted by mid March unless action is taken. The extra 1.5 billion would tide the program over until June 30 1956. The program guarantees payments on defaulted mortgages written by banks and private lenders for up to 95 percent of face value. Cole noted the flood of applications followed last year’s liberalization of down payments and terms and said the agency has committed nearly 17 billion in insuring mortgages with only four billion left. A small portion would be used in the home buying program. Queen Wilhelmina abdicated September 6 1948 Juliana became Queen.
