Butter Price Support Cut Announced by Benson
Secretary Benson announced a reduction in the butter price support effective April 1 from 66 cents to about 58 cents per pound with parallel cuts in cheese and dried skim milk. Dairy price supports for the year will be set at 75 percent of parity, the minimum legally allowed, down from 90 percent. The move could lower retail butter prices and comes as the government holds over 330 million dollars in surplus dairy products. Some dairy producers favor fewer supports to boost consumption.
