Maryland Senate Would Shield Produce From Harmful Remarks

The Maryland Senate passed a bill 32 to 7 to protect producers of fruit vegetables and poultry from disparaging remarks that could hurt markets. Sponsors Stoltzfus and Colburn say the measure guards farmers and their crops amid debates sparked by the Alar scare and potential litigation over speech rights. Critics worry it could curb free expression and question enforceability.
