In New York the stock market moved on news of a possible government bond issue instead of a soldiers bonus. Senece Copper weakened, dropping 42 points on a selloff blamed on a stock exchange firm's failure. Call money opened at 5 percent with time funds quoted from 4 3/4 to 6 percent.
New York February 14 The theft of 200 barrels of whiskey valued at $400000 was foiled when pro dition agents detected a six by six foot hole cut in a brick wall between two buildings The loot had been hoisted from the second to the third floor and moved toward an alley and truck before police approached forcing the schemers to flee
Secretary of State Hughes sails from New York to Bermuda and Washington on February 14 for a two week stay to visit a daughter and recover from a strenuous work period. The report notes the difficulty of pronouncing Doctor Sze’s name and confirms the spelling.
The New York stock exchange firm Crawford Patton and Cannon collapsed with liabilities near 3.3 million and assets about 3 million. John Brickner, a British seaman, floats in a lifeboat about 500 miles from New York after a gale. Captain Walter Beckwith of the steamer Gaffney battled waves, attempted rescue, and broadcast calls as the lifeboat rode stormy seas with Brickner surviving by drinking seawater and keeping hope alive through the sixth night.

Washington February 14 The President's attitude toward financing veterans bonuses remains unsettled as the regular Cabinet decision was expected later. The House Means Committee considers issuing short term notes to cover about 800 million dollars in payments over 30 months starting January 1, 1923. Officials indicate the President favors some form of bonus but would require prudent rates and not harm social security.
United Mine Workers of America press report from Indianapolis notes miners oppose mining price cuts and demand a new wage scale. A special convention urges suspending mining if no agreement by April 1 and submitting the wage schedule to a district referendum with a March 31 vote.
