Local attorney faces disbarment over tax nonpayment
Willie Mahone, a well known local civil rights attorney, could lose his license after failing to file and pay state and federal taxes for three years. A daylong hearing in Frederick County Circuit Court was held at the request of the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission. Judge Mary Ann Stepler will issue findings of fact within 30 days. The Maryland Court of Appeals will review her report and the hearing transcript before deciding sanctions, which range from dismissal to suspension or disbarment. Mahone admitted the tax failures and urged consideration of his community work and financial hardships since 1992 when his firm’s net income fell sharply. Kendall Calhoun argued that mitigation affects punishment, not guilt, and noted no intent to deceive tax authorities was found. Continued on Page A-4.
