Gaithersburg Annexations Defended By Manager

Gaithersburg views rapid growth through annexation as explained by Town Administrator William Q. Vose to aid legislators. He notes the corridor city plan, ongoing planning since 1957, a full time planning office since 1966, and a revised Master Plan with county cooperation since 1965. Annexed acres since 1965 total 2,133, with 1,261 acres showing no density increase. 500 acres of the Kent tract are farmed and tax-exempt until developed. Two annexations are pending, one involving 350 acres with no zoning changes.

County Council urged coordinated annexation planning

Vose spoke for himself and not the entire County Council as President David Scull described Annapolis efforts to place municipal expansion under council approval. He argued growth must be intelligent and dovetail with county plans, with clear funding for services and better countywide planning control. Scull emphasized the need for coordination of municipalities’ effects on the county’s overall plan.
