Fort Frederick to be Retained by Forestry Dept
Old Fort Frederick on the Potomac in Washington County will be preserved by the Department of Forestry after its acquisition from Homer J. Cavanaugh. Built in 1755 to guard settlers, it withstood Indian and French incursions and later served as a prison and temporary Civil War encampment. The state will add 183 acres for a recreation center and experimental work, with a 1923 appropriation planned for further preservation.
