A 20-year-old waiter Leon Breto n, described as an anarchist, exploded a bomb in a cafe opposite the St Lazare train station. Dispatches from Ayes detail a Friday battle near Rio de Janeiro with rebels landing at Armacao and pressing government troops. After severe fighting, Armacao was damaged, and government forces retreated. Casualties listed include five officers and forty men captured, six officers and fifty men killed, with heavier losses in the later hours. Admiral da Gama was wounded but not fatally.
