Small trees wasteful for sawlogs says forester Dengler
Forester Dengler notes that three men can do what four do when cutting small trees up to 15 inches in diameter. He finds 18 percent more man hours are needed to process 1,000 board feet from trees under 15 inches than from larger trees. Lumber value from under 15 inch trees is $ less per 1,000 feet than from trees 15 inches and up, and Maryland forests should remove small dense or crooked trees for future growth. Small trees should be used for fuel, fence posts, mine timbers, or pulp wood rather than sawlogs.

Graham of Richmond warns prices below production cost trigger flock liquidation and potential baby chick shortages, risking a fall egg shortage and possible black marketing. He cites feed costs up 18 to 20 percent, higher labor, and overall production cost rises as the main cause.
