A $20,000 joint grant from Mount Airy and the SBA could fund pruning and planting on about a half acre of land at Ridge and Park Avenues near Wildwood Park. Bids will hire landscapers to plant trees, with a future path and benches to preserve the woodsy feel as aging trees are replaced.

Asbestos case imposes punitive damages on three firms
A Baltimore jury set punitive damages for Westinghouse Harbison-Walker and Rapid-American in the nation’s largest consolidated asbestos case. The panel also awarded compensatories, with Westinghouse and Harbison-Walker to pay double the compensatory amount and Rapid-American equal amounts. The verdict follows a 1992 ruling that 9,700 defendants and 18 companies were negligent, with early compensatory awards totaling over 20 million to five plaintiffs. John Goodman, who received 9 million, died a year earlier from mesothelioma while insulating pipes for Standard Oil in Baltimore between 1951 and 1957.
