Maryland Court Again Considers Crumps Custody Case
The Maryland Court of Appeals heard arguments from Lloyd R. Crump and his wife Dorothy seeking a ruling on the custody of their 3 year old son Johnnie. The case stems from a Wicomico County decision awarding custody to Arthur and Mary Montgomery of Salisbury after the Welfare Board placed the child with the Crumps for a month then transferred him to Montgomery County guardians. The Crumps say they tried to adopt and met with welfare officials, arguing the child’s best interests require return to their Rockville home.

Maryland bill on local taxes may wait for next year
Senate sponsor Sen. H Winship Wheatley Jr. said he may defer enacting a bill that would shift personal property taxes from utilities to subdivisions. If Gov. Tawes program adds $50 million for subdivisions falters, Wheatley may reopen the utility bill later. The tax shift would redirect shares of stock to local governments, a plan already drawing mixed support and facing estimated losses to Baltimore City and gains to several counties. Committee action was not taken.
