Japanese forces pressed toward Rangoon Burma crossing the Salween near Martaban and attacking Thaton as British air raids hit Paan. In the Dutch East Indies the attack extended to Macassar and Bandjermasin with Dutch defenses and disrupted Bandjermasin communications.
Ellicott City reports a woman found dead in a ditch along Frederick road has been identified as Sallie Anne Rhodes, 35, of Baltimore. Her husband Ernest Rhodes, who identified her, said she had been missing since Friday night after he was late meeting her at a tavern. He notified Baltimore police when she did not return by Sunday.
Berlin radio announced eight more merchant ships totaling 50 500 tons and a corvette were sunk by U boats in the Atlantic. Six ships, 34 000 tons, were off the North American coast, raising Berlin's claim to 61 merchantmen sunk off U S and Canadian coasts. Ceiling collapses at Rennert Hotel in Baltimore injuring one worker and endangering 39.
J Welty Fahrney a prominent Frederick resident and churchman today declared his candidacy for Judge of the Orphans Court. He is the third Republican in the field for the three seats to be filled next November. He previously ran unsuccessfully in 1938 joining Dr Clyde Boutson and Pinkney A Richardson who seek re election after winning in that year.
London Feb 104 The government escaped a defeat in the House of Lords this afternoon by a margin of only three votes.
London reports 2,908 killed among 18,000 British casualties in the Libya battle. Official spokesman confirms figures disclosed by Prime Minister Churchill last month.
Helsinki reports the Finnish command states the 367th division of the Russian army was destroyed in a two day battle, marking a straightening of the Finnish front north of Lake Onega.
Washington February 10 Leon Henderson Price Administrator urged the national War Labor Board to rule against broad union wage raise demands as inflationary. He argues that substantial increases would worsen price levels and disrupt wartime balance. He stresses targeting only necessary adjustments to maintain wage fairness without fueling inflation.
A local Negro man, Leroy Carroll, faced assault and battery charges on Mrs Wenona V. Volgamott near Frederick Junction. The State's Attorney announced plans to pursue a harsher charge, likely assault with intent to rape, while Carroll remains jailed on a separate rapecharge involving his niece. The case may go to the February grand jury after the stet motion.

Ira Harrison Buhrman a 33 year old Foxville veteran of World War II with numerous sharpshooter medals is listed missing after the India Arrow tanker was torpedoed off the New Jersey coast. The loss includes 26 crew with 12 survivors, and Buhrman’s fate remains undetermined amid a swift sinking and limited engine room escape. Buhrman was born November 10 1887 served in Marine units before returning to civilian work at Camp Ritchie and had joined the vessel’s crew on October 8 1941. He leaves two brothers Archie and Raymond and four sisters in Maryland and Pennsylvania communities.
Boston Feb 10 The vanguard of a United States naval force has arrived at Wellington New Zealand with reinforcements landing at way stations along the 4000 mile route from Pearl Harbor. Correspondent Joseph C Harsch describes the landfall and notes the supply line victory over Japan and the open path for further American forces.
Local boards urge all registrants to appear this weekend at schools in Frederick and Brunswick and county centers. Registration runs 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday with extended hours Monday, while offices of the draft board are closed.
