George Ade, noted author and humorist, is rumored to abandon slang in his writing. If true, the change would be as startling as Charles Dana Gibson leaving pen and ink sketches. Ade turns forty on February 9, and may feel it time to reform. His works Fables In Liang, More Fables, and The Girl Proposition have gained wide popularity.
At a February meeting in fease operators voted unanimously to refuse the United Mine Workers demands. The scale committee report was read and a brief dissent surfaced before the full conference approved the motion. The Dolan injunction case in Philburg Pa concerns President Dolan and local delegates in a five day struggle to oust him from office. Disorder and delays marked the convention as legal action halted further moves.
In Philadelphia a grandmother, the foster mother, and the grandson were implicated after a newborn infant died by chloroform asphyxia. The jury found the grandmother guilty of murder in the first degree after seven hours deliberation. Judge Ralston urged careful consideration by the board of pardons for possible commutation.
In Washington the senate defeated an amendment to strike out the eight hour labor limit in the canal zone. Senator Patterson of Colorado argued removing the limit would bar American labor and harm employment. the amendment failed without division. Snow Storm Delays Travel in Pennsylvania. Philadelphia reports the eastern storm to be the heaviest of the winter with 15 inches to two feet in the mountains. transit delays eased by night but coal mines face car shortages and worker access issues.

Representative Tone Worth of Ohio reports Nick Longworth III, prospective husband of Miss Roosevelt, is ill at his mother's home in the city. Officials say the illness is not serious and expect recovery after rest and medical care within a few days.
A devastating blaze in Littleton, an oil town near Martinsville, West Virginia, destroyed about 100 to 160 houses and left 150 families homeless. The fire started in the center of town near the Baltimore and Ohio tracks, spread rapidly in winds, and dynamite was used in a failed attempt to stop it. Nearly all businesses were burned and the total loss exceeded 200 thousand dollars.
