Lax oversight at federal labs risks workers safety

An Energy Department inspector general report found eight federal labs conducted experiments with lethal agents under weak oversight, potentially endangering workers and the public. The yearlong probe covered 1999 to January and cited lax registration, damaged-package handling, and inadequate CDC compliance at Brookhaven, Idaho National Laboratory, Sandia, Lawrence Livermore, Lawrence Berkeley, Oak Ridge, and Los Alamos. No harm to people was found, but risks from botulinum toxin and other agents were noted.
