Frederick’s oldest family founder’s rugged early life
The 19th century narrative follows Samuel Weinberg from Baltimore dry goods to Virginia peddling, then back to Frederick in 1861. He faced debt, violence, and a gun threat, survived, and built a flourishing business in gents’ furnishings and ladies’ goods. He married Amelia Lowenstein in 1863, moving to East Second Street in Frederick. Their legacy persists in county namesakes Cody Samuel Weinberg and Amelia Weinberg.
