Maryland Potatoes See Mixed 1953 Results and 1954 Acreage Cuts

Maryland experienced a 12 percent price rise in 1953 while growers faced lower prices and varying production. North of Maryland the winter to early spring crops rose 34 percent above 1952 and late spring to early summer output grew about 30 percent. Intermediate and late states reported a 4 percent production increase. USDA reports indicate growers plan to cut 1954 acreage by about 21 percent in winter to late spring areas, with larger stocks and last year’s low prices driving the potential reduction. Idaho and Maine also plan about a 7 percent acreage cut.
