Two Redistricting Bills Introduced In House
ANNAPOLIS Maryland lawmakers introduced two redistricting bills aimed at equalizing population across eight congressional seats. One plan mirrors the Maryland Citizens Committee proposal, reshaping districts across the state and urban areas. A second Beall led measure outlines alternate divisions, prompting court consideration of statewide elections if no enactment occurs. Governor Tawes expresses limited chance of passage this session amid ongoing court scrutiny. Alfred L. Scanlan says he will seek a court order for statewide elections if no bill passes. Beall stresses the issue should be discussed this session despite delays.

Lawmakers debate district maps and court action quotes
Timore hinted that current districts are unconstitutional and warned the court may act if the legislature fails. Beall defended legislative integrity, saying complaints of judicial encroachment exist but responsibility lies with lawmakers. A Republican sponsored bill is viewed as a legislative matter, not party driven.
