May End County Tax On Tobacco
The Board of County Commissioners plans to confer with county legislators on the State leader pay bill before final action. President Desert S. Null proposes eliminating Frederick county tobacco tax if the three cent State tobacco tax remains to fund teacher pay. Commissioners seek full understanding of the bill, which raises teacher pay and principals' salaries, plus about 100 more per classroom in education aid. Local debate centers on financing the pay raise, with Frederick and Washington counties facing similar issues. Estimates show Frederick county would gain $215,400 for teacher salaries in the 1958-59 year, with other funds to follow for classroom and principal pay increases.
